In 1799, the military of Tsarist Russia was to participate in a joint Russo-British operation against France. On the way to the Netherlands, some of them fell ill and were sent to quarantine on Saint Mary's Island, located near the town of Whitley Bay. Those who died from illnesses were buried there, but the grave and memorial markers of these burials have not survived to this day.
