Unfortunately, during the Soviet era, many architectural monuments of pre-revolutionary Rostov-on-Don were lost. Among these vanished buildings was the mill owned by the famous Rostov merchant Solodov. Built in 1870, it was a rare example of an industrial building located within the city limits, which gave it special value as a historical monument.

The mill was two stories high with a central part that was elevated and topped with a spire. The facade of the building was adorned with elements of plaster decor in the styles of pseudo-Gothic and Renaissance, which were uncommon for the city. The architectural appearance of the facade was shaped by the first floor, where there were profiled window frames and archivolts of high semi-circular openings, as well as pointed archivolts. On the decorative pilasters of the second floor windows, there was a massive arcature frieze, and the cornices were decorated with teeth. The uniqueness of the facade was also enhanced by the extreme openings of the second floor with fan-shaped arches.

Since 1870, the mill was used for its intended purpose, equipped with a machine with a power of 80 horsepower and a staff of 48 workers, allowing for the production of up to 300 thousand poods of flour per month. By 1875, the owner of the mill became Ivanov Stepan Ivanovich. Due to the destruction of earlier documents during the Soviet years, the name of the original owner is unknown. It is only known that after Ivanov, around 1885, the mill was owned by merchant Solodov, under whose name it entered the history of Rostov-on-Don.
