Most streets in Akhuny reflect the history of this area. Konnazavodskaya Street got its name because it led to the state stables, established back in the time of Nicholas I in 1846. At a time when cars did not exist, horses were the main workforce both in agriculture and in the army. Having a stable then was equivalent to owning a luxury car fleet today. Often, the state could not afford to create stables from scratch and purchased existing facilities. This was the case with the estate of landowner Arapov, whose racehorses and infrastructure were bought by the State Horse Breeding Administration. However, the facility was not located in Penza, but in the Lunin district, and was moved to Akhuny only in the early 20th century. Unlike others, they bred elite Orlov trotters here. Notably, Penza horses were considered some of the best in Russia and won prizes in competitions. Later, a Union of Orlov Horse Breeders was established in the country, which included the Akhuny stable. During the Civil War, when villages lacked labor, Orlov trotters were planned to be used in agriculture. However, horse breeders managed to convince local authorities to abandon this idea.
