How can one restart the heart of a deceased person or revive a head separated from the body? These questions sound frightening, but Russian physiologist Alexey Alexandrovich Kulyabko knew the answers. In 1893, he graduated from the medical faculty of Tomsk University and went for an internship in Germany. Upon returning, he began scientific research, focusing on the work of the heart.

His first success was reviving a rabbit's heart four days after its death. To start the "motor," Kulyabko used the method of perfusion, which involves the supply and passage of blood, blood-substituting solutions, and biologically active substances. For this, he applied a heated Lock's solution, saturated with oxygen. This experiment sparked interest among the scientific elite of Russia, although reviving the rabbit was not successful. Academician Ivan Pavlov noted that this opens up possibilities for deep research that previously seemed impossible.

However, a true breakthrough was the revival of the heart of a three-month-old child who died from pneumonia. The organ was delivered to Kulyabko 20 hours after death, and the heartbeat continued for over an hour. This helped scientists better understand how to sustain life in a person on the brink of death and effectively bring them back to life.

Additionally, Alexey Alexandrovich studied the central nervous system and the brain. Using the same Lock's solution, he was able to revive an isolated fish head and restore the activity of the central nervous system after its cessation. These experiments inspired writer Alexander Belyaev to create the plot for the work "The Head of Professor Dowell." Alexey Kulyabko was later recognized as one of the leading physiologists in the world.
