The Knyazhpogostsky Historical and Local Lore Museum was founded on the basis of a public museum that had been operating at the district House of Culture since 1969. By a decision of the executive committee of the Knyazhpogostsky District Council of People's Deputies on October 20, 1988, the establishment of the district historical and local lore museum was approved. A two-story wooden building from the 1940s, which previously housed the military enlistment office, was allocated for it.

In July 1990, the museum became part of the municipal institutions system. Currently, its collections number 5,065 items in the main fund. The collection includes zoological, ethnographic, historical and household items, as well as photographs, documentary materials, visual sources, and technical objects. The fund highlights memorial collections of famous people who were born in the Knyazhpogostsky District of the Republic of Komi. The museum has its own emblem, based on an ancient salt shaker, a duck made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from birch burl. The salt shaker is covered with oil and has a lid. Such salt shakers were an essential attribute of wedding rituals among the Komi, symbolizing parental blessing and future family happiness.

The museum offers permanent exhibitions: "Nature and Wildlife of the Knyazhpogostsky District," "Culture and Life of the Komi Land in the 17th and Early 20th Centuries," "Dedicated to the Living and the Fallen" (about the district in the 1930s-40s), and "The District Where I Live." The museum hosts thematic events, exhibitions, showcases of artists' works, masters of folk crafts, as well as exhibitions of children's creativity.

The museum has a historical and local lore club called "Old Timers," which organizes excursions, lectures, presentations, and meetings with veterans, local historians, and history enthusiasts.

In the village of Turya, which is over 540 years old, a branch of the museum has been opened. In 2005, it was named after the famous sociologist Pitirim Sorokin. The museum features the interior of a peasant house from the late 19th century and a large collection of household items of the Komi people. Visitors can sit at an ancient wooden table, turn a hand mill, and play an old Komi game called "sheg." The tour explains the use of wooden plows and harrows, sickles, hand mills, and curved sickles, and also demonstrates the operation of a weaving loom. Special interest is aroused by the hunter's equipment: an ancient flintlock rifle, a spear for bear hunting, and fish traps. Those interested can take a memorable photo in folk costumes.
