In September 1962, residents of the southern part of the RSFSR met "guests from the past." At this time, the Nekrasov Cossacks began to arrive in Kuban, having left Russia in the early 18th century. Their adventures lasted almost two centuries and have a rich history.

After the defeat of the Bulavin Uprising, many Cossacks and peasants did not want to remain under the rule of the Russian tsar and headed to Kuban, becoming subjects of the Ottoman Empire. They were led by the Old Believer Cossack Ignat Nekrasov. They strictly followed 170 commandments, including such ones as "for marrying non-believers, death" and "for killing a community member, bury him in the ground."

As the tsarist troops advanced, the Nekrasov Cossacks moved further and further until they settled on the Turkish island of Mainos. They preserved their way of life, Old Believer faith, and unique dialect. The Turks noted their hard work: they started working before dawn and returned home when the sun began to set.

On Mainos, where there was plenty of fish, the "Ignat Cossacks" developed a traditional dish, fish dumplings. They separated the meat from the bones, made a filling with salt, onions, and Eastern spices, and then wrapped it in dough. In each dumpling, they left a small hole so that the meat would soak up the broth.

Some elements of daily life were borrowed from the Turks. For example, they liked to sit on mats with their legs tucked under them and drink hot coffee. Turkish words penetrated Russian folk songs; two centuries in the East did not pass without a trace.

Until 1955, the Nekrasov Cossacks did not plan to return to their historical homeland until the Constantinople pogrom occurred. Dozens of houses were burned, churches were destroyed, and Christian graves were desecrated. Local authorities began to hint to the Nekrasov Cossacks that they were outsiders and it was time for them to leave Mainos. The USSR agreed to accept the Old Believers, and in 1962, nearly a thousand Cossacks arrived in Kuban. Most settled in the village of Novokumsk in Stavropol Krai.
