Who Was Belinsky's Most Disliked Teacher?

Фото 1
Each of us may have had a teacher in school who evoked dislike. The reasons could vary: sharp remarks or teaching methods. Even the famous literary critic Vissarion Grigorievich Belinsky had such a teacher. In his childhood, he studied in Penza, at one of the most prestigious gymnasiums of the Penza province in the 19th century. The education there was strict and comprehensive: physics, mathematics, Russian language, history, geography, and other subjects were taught. By graduation, students were fluent in Latin.

However, even in this gymnasium, there were teachers with difficult personalities. The physics and mathematics teacher Vasily Merkushev took an instant dislike to Belinsky. Classmates recalled: "Once, Vissarion did not understand an equation and asked for it to be explained again. Vasily Filippovich unexpectedly flared up and shouted: 'Damn you, understand it however you want, but I will not repeat anything,' after which, breaking the chalk on the board, he left the classroom. In the next lesson, when questioning began, poor answers were met with low grades."

According to rumors, Merkushev often asked Belinsky questions that were only studied in physics and mathematics faculties. Perhaps he disliked Vissarion for his interest in history and literature, considering the humanities secondary. Nevertheless, Belinsky successfully enrolled in Moscow University and became one of its best graduates. Did you have a disliked teacher?
