The first church in the village of Verkhopenye was likely built soon after its founding in the 17th century. It was consecrated in honor of Archangel Michael and was mentioned in documents as the Archangel or Mikhailov Church. The church was located on the territory of the Peasant Society, now Kolkhoznaya Street. The wooden church had two altars, the main one dedicated to Archangel Michael. In 1784, a priest named Solodovnikov served there. In the early 19th century, the rector was Father Trofim, who was replaced in 1820 by Priest Fyodor Stefanovich Markov. His son, Georgy Markov, graduated from the Kursk Theological Seminary in 1855 and was ordained by Archbishop Iliodor of Kursk and Belgorod as a priest of the Archangel Church in the village of Mikhailovskoye-Verkhopenye, serving there until 1863.

In 1878, with donations from the residents of Mikhailovskoye, a new stone church made of red brick was consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It had three altars: of the prophet Elijah, Archangel Michael, and the main one, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1879, a church-parish school was opened at the church.

The Assumption Church had two priests, the rector and his assistant, one deacon, and two psalmists. In 1884, the staff included Rector Pavel Kosmodemyansky, his assistant Ioann Malyarovsky, Deacon Matvey Solodovnikov, and psalmists Alexei and Vasily Popov. Later, Priest Evdokiy Maslov served, along with his assistant Ioann Malyarovsky (who was replaced by Gavriil Rozhdestvensky in June 1894), Deacon Alexei Gorodetsky, and psalmists Vasily Popov and Pyotr Fyodorovich Fedyushin. The church was associated with the Nikolskaya Cemetery Church, built in 1891.

In 1908, the staff included Rector Pyotr Vasilyevich Bragin, assistant Alexander Trofimovich Karachevtsov, Deacon V.I. Antonov, and psalmists Pyotr Fyodorovich Fedyushin and A.I. Popov. Also living there was the retired priest Gavriil Mikhailovich Rozhdestvensky. Sixty-six desyatinas of arable land were allocated for the maintenance of the clergy. In 1909-1910, Deacon Alexander Alexandrovich Andriyevsky served, who also taught at the church-parish women's school.

Before the 1917 revolution, Priest Alexander Terentyevich Karachevtsov and psalmists Pyotr Fyodorovich Fedyushin and Evdokiy Yakovlevich Fedyushin served. The church elder until 1917 was Nikanor Mikhailovich Galkin, and from 1917, Ivan Trofimovich Sidelnikov.

In the 1920s, there was only one registered priest left in Verkhopenye, Alexander Karachevtsov. In the autumn of 1929, the Nikolskaya and Assumption churches were closed and turned into grain storage facilities. After the peasant uprising in the Ivnyansky district that same year, Karachevtsov was dispossessed and evicted. In 1932, his house was converted into a primary school. In 1937-1938, the dismantling of the Assumption Church began: the bell tower was destroyed, the domes were removed, and the roof was taken apart. The building housed a workshop of the Verkhopen MTS. The Nikolskaya Cemetery Church was dismantled for logs to build a warehouse for the Ivnyan butter factory.

During the Great Patriotic War, Father Alexander Karachevtsov returned to Verkhopenye, and services were held in his house, temporarily returned to him (now the site of a pharmacy). In 1942, German troops began dismantling the walls of the Assumption Church, using bricks for road repairs on the Moscow-Crimea road. During the battles on the Kursk Bulge, the church was severely damaged, leaving only ruins. After the war, the church was completely dismantled, and the bricks were used to restore houses.

In 1999, a prayer house was consecrated in Verkhopenye in the building of the former House of Culture in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the first service held on Easter. Father Sergey Reutov, a graduate of the Belgorod Theological Seminary, became the rector.

On July 20, 2003, the construction of a new church began, and on July 26, 2004, golden domes appeared over the village. The main construction was completed by September 2004, and on January 5, 2005, church bells were brought from Voronezh. Already on January 7, 2005, the sound of the bells rang out over the village.

On August 27, 2005, Archbishop Ioann of Belgorod and Starooskol consecrated the church in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Currently, the parish of the Assumption Church includes neighboring villages: Beryozovka, 1st Novoselovka, and the Pokrovsky hamlet. The Kazan prayer house in the village of Syrtsevo is also attached to the parish.
