The church in honor of St. John of Kronstadt was built in just over a year thanks to the initiative and generosity of Petersburg resident Evgeny Vasilyevich Tomak, owner of OAO "Bryansk Worsted Mill." The construction was supported by the Bryansk Diocese, receiving a blessing from Bishop Theophilakt of Bryansk and Sevsk. The laying of the cornerstone took place in August 2007, and the consecration of the church occurred on November 2, 2008, the year marking the centenary of St. John of Kronstadt's death.

The architectural appearance of the church, except for the taller bell tower, resembles the stone church of Cosmas and Damian in the village of Baryshye, built between 1829 and 1834 with funds from Colonel Mikhail Petrovich Bakhtin, known for his philanthropy. For this, Nicholas I awarded him the rank of general and the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree. Unfortunately, the church of Cosmas and Damian is now in a ruined state.

Although St. John never visited Bryansk, the dedication of the church to him was chosen by Bishop Theophilakt, emphasizing the spiritual significance of this event. In the 1980s, when it was forbidden to speak of John of Kronstadt, the former Bishop Melchisedek of Bryansk and Sevsk composed an akathist to the saint, which he read privately. After the canonization of John of Kronstadt in 1990, this akathist was blessed by Patriarch Alexy II and began to be read throughout Russia. Thus, Bryansk became the birthplace of this akathist.

Archpriest Gennady Belovolov, the rector of the Leushinsky Podvorie in St. Petersburg and director of the Memorial Museum-Apartment of John of Kronstadt, gifted the church an icon of the saint, consecrated in the museum-apartment. It is an exact copy of the miraculous image from the Holy John Monastery on Karpovka, where the saint rests. The icon has a reliquary containing a piece of the epitrachelion of John of Kronstadt. Along with it, the church received two more icons: the Image of the Most Holy Theotokos of Leushino "I am with you and no one against you" and the image of the Tikhvin Mother of God, which were especially revered by John of Kronstadt.
