The Church of the Holy Spirit in the village of Flenovo, located in the Smolensk region, was built in the early 20th century with funds from Princess Tenisheva. Its history begins in the late 19th century when Maria Klavdievna acquired this territory and included it in her estate in Talashkino. She decided to build a new church here.

The artist Sergey Vasilyevich Malyutin was invited to design the church, who, at the request of the client, took the church in the Moscow region of Abramtsevo as a model. This was Malyutin's first architectural project, which he agreed to undertake at the request of their mutual friend Vrubel.

In 1899, Malyutin personally visited Talashkino, where he spent several months creating numerous sketches. Then Ivan Fyodorovich Barshevsky, under the guidance of the princess, created a model of the church.

The foundation was solemnly laid on September 7, 1900, and the main construction work took place from 1902 to 1905. The interiors of the church were painted by the famous artist Nikolai Roerich, and his sons and students participated in the decoration.

The results of the work were highly appreciated by numerous distinguished guests of Princess Tenisheva. However, the princess did not manage to fully complete the decoration of the Church of the Holy Spirit. After the Bolshevik revolution, she was forced to emigrate, and her property was confiscated by the new authorities.

In 1924, the church was desecrated and looted. The Bolsheviks removed the body of Vyacheslav Tenishev from the church crypt and desecrated it in front of local residents.

Over the following decades, a significant portion of the church's frescoes was lost. Only in 2001 did restoration begin, which continues to this day.
