At a city assembly in Lgov, a decision was made to build a church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker to commemorate the miraculous salvation of the Imperial family in a railway disaster. Construction lasted from 1888 to 1911 and was funded by donations from the townspeople. Prominent Lgov merchants played an important role in this process: the Pafnutievs, Konshins, Krygins, Gaditskys, and Zhbankovs. The bricks for the church were supplied from a nearby factory, and the interior decoration was characterized by its richness. The iconostasis was created based on sketches by N.D. Bartram in a well-known Moscow Semenov workshop.

After the revolution, services continued in the church, but after the decree on the confiscation of church valuables in 1922, the authorities repeatedly seized the church's property. In the 1930s, the church was closed, and services ceased.

During the Great Patriotic War, when Lgov was under occupation from 1941 to 1943, the church reopened, and services resumed. Since then, they have continued to this day.
