The St. Nicholas Church in Shebekino was built from 2007 to 2014 on the site of an 18th-century church that was destroyed after the revolution.

On the outskirts of Shebekino was the ancient village of Ustinka, where a monastic community, the Korenskaya Nikolaevskaya Male Desert, was located. It was named in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Korennaya River. Initially, it was a place of solitude for two hermits, Ion and Pimen, in the Korennyy Forest. Many who came seeking advice stayed here, and thus the desert was formed.

The main spiritual treasure was the miraculous icon of St. Nicholas the Warrior. A miracle from this icon occurred on May 18 in the 16th-17th centuries (the exact year is unknown). The residents of Ustinka and the monks of the desert frightened the Tatars from the Wild Field: "The clergy and monks, standing on the right bank of the river, shouted to the Tatars: 'Turn back; by the power of the Lord's Cross, St. Nicholas will drown you in this river.' Due to the crowding, some Tatars fell into the river, and the horde, frightened, retreated." The icon was highly revered, and on July 5, 1765, the Belgorod Spiritual Consistory decreed: "Due to the poverty of the monastery, the Korennaya Desert of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Belgorod County is to be abolished, and the miraculous image is to be transferred to the Belgorod Cathedral Trinity Church, while the remaining St. Nicholas Church is to be made a parish...".

However, before the revolution, every year on May 18, the icon was returned to Ustinka in a procession and remained there until May 24, after which it was returned to Belgorod for the late liturgy in the monastery cathedral.

In 1808, a new stone church was built in Ustinka, but after the 1917 revolution, the church was destroyed, and a school was built in its place.

The construction of the new church began on June 7, 2007, and it was consecrated by Metropolitan John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol on July 26, 2014. In 1995, when the icon of Nicholas the Warrior was rediscovered, processions to the river resumed. Now the procession goes from Belgorod to the Nikolsky Church in Ustinka, and then to the spring by the river.
