The Church of St. Nicholas is considered the main treasure of the city of Novosil. Historical data indicates that once on the banks of the Zusha River stood a wooden monastery with a bell tower, consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas.

From 1810 to 1858, a new brick Nicholas Church was built in the city square, funded by local merchants and shopkeepers. This temple amazed with its beauty and grandeur.

In 1917, with the rise of the Bolsheviks, all four churches in Novosil, including St. Nicholas Church, were looted and desecrated.

In 1935, after repairs, the building of the church housed a youth club. In November-December 1941, during the occupation of Novosil by the fascists, the city was burned, and St. Nicholas Church also suffered from the fire. In 1989, the monastery was restored and re-consecrated. In 1995-1997, a four-tiered bell tower and entrance arch were built next to it. Currently, the church is active.
