The wooden fortifications and churches that previously stood on this site were destroyed by fire in 1672. At that time, the city was experiencing economic growth, and brick churches were built on the site of the burned structures. The summer Savior Church was erected first in 1689 and 1691, simultaneously with the Trinity Cathedral and the Epiphany Church.

In 1761, the iconostasis was updated, for which local craftsmen, peasant Polycarp Golovin and the church elder Peter Petelin, created icons. Until 1850, the domes of the church were covered with wooden shingles, which were later replaced with gilded iron.

Before the 1917 revolution, the church was served by priest Grigory Garyaev and deacon Alexander Ipatov, who were killed in September 1918. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized them as holy martyrs in 2000. In the early 1930s, the church was closed, and the DOSAAF committee was housed in its building. Now, the Savior Church is once again functioning as a parish, and services have resumed.

The Savior and Archangel churches are located in the historical center of the city, where the wooden city kremlin and wooden churches once stood in ancient times. By the time the brick churches were built, the city center had shifted eastward to the area of the Trinity Cathedral. The city is situated on a slope descending to the Usolka River, so even the kremlin was not on a height but on a slope between two ravines that cut through the hill. Now the ravines have smoothed out and become less noticeable. In the past, these churches played an important role in the appearance of the city, but now their visibility is hindered by modern construction.

The five-domed, two-pillar square of the church is elongated in the transverse direction, giving it a certain massiveness and heaviness. The patterned window frames stand out on the flat walls. A feature of the altar's design is the massive figured half-columns that divide the three altar sections.
