Until 1713, a simple wooden church stood over the holy spring in the Kursk Root Monastery. The construction of a stone temple became possible thanks to General Field Marshal Sheremetev.

According to the monastery records, after the victory over the Swedes at Poltava, Field Marshal Count B. P. Sheremetev, passing by the Root Monastery on his way to Moscow, stopped there to pray. He saw that an old wooden church stood on this significant and holy site, and, filled with devotion to the Most Holy Theotokos, he decided to build a stone temple at his own expense. The construction was carried out under his supervision.

Boris Petrovich Sheremetev also donated some church utensils. Although it is unknown how well he provided the church with everything necessary, for a long time, the Gospel with his personal inscription was kept here: 'This Holy Gospel was presented by Field Marshal B. P. Sheremetev to the newly built stone church in the name of the Life-Giving Spring at the holy well, in the year 1714, on the 17th day of August.' In the 1765 inventory of the church in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Life-Giving Spring', it is mentioned that it was made of stone, located by the Tuskori River, and had two wooden domes. One of them was painted and adorned with a gilded cross, while the other, above the altar, remained unpainted and without gilding.

In the early 19th century, the temple was covered with iron thanks to a donation from Petersburg merchant Matvey Glukhov. Under Archimandrite Paisius, who managed the Root Monastery in 1831 and 1841, stone steps with eight tiers were built from the upper square of the monastery to the church of the Life-Giving Spring. In the pre-revolutionary description of the monastery, it is stated that the first two tiers went from south to north, starting opposite the southern side of the cathedral, while the remaining ones descended to the church from west to east.

The temple of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Life-Giving Spring' was restored in 2012 and consecrated by episcopal ordination on September 24 of the same year.
