Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Quick to Hear" at Khodynka Field

The name of the church raises questions today, as what we call Khodynka Field is located elsewhere, within the ring railway and two kilometers from the church. However, in the 19th century, Khodynka Field occupied a much larger area and extended almost to Shchukino. In the 1900s, the ring railway divided it into two parts. In the first half of the 19th century, military camps began to appear at Khodynka, located in the eastern part of the field, closer to Shchukino. In the early 20th century, this part was called the Military Field, and from 1922, the October Field. In the 1930s, barracks began to be built here, and later, in the 1940s and 50s, Stalinist houses appeared. The military camps were located north of the current Marshal Rybalko Street. To the north of them was the Bolshaya Vsyekhsviatskaya Grove, of which only a small part has survived to this day.

The church was built on the territory of the military camps, near the Moscow military hospital, and its main parishioners were cadets and officers. The first church, dedicated to Saint Panteleimon, was wooden and appeared in 1897. Its architect was I. Molchanov. The current church was erected next to the wooden one in 1902 and was dedicated to the icon "Quick to Hear," to which people turned in times of trouble and emergencies, such as shipwrecks, fires, and floods.

The church was laid on June 8, 1901, and consecrated on August 1, 1902. Unfortunately, the architect is unknown. The newspaper "Moscow Church News" reported that during the service conducted by the chief priest of the army and navy A. Zhelobovsky, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna were present. At that time, Sergei Alexandrovich was the governor-general of Moscow.

The church is designed in the neo-Russian style, stylized after the Russian ornamentation of the 17th century. This applies to details such as the arched portal on the southwest side. There are several prototypes of this portal in Moscow, for example, at the churches of Cosmas and Damian in Starye Panehi, Trinity in Listy, and others. The windows with keel-shaped finishes above the portal are also characteristic of pre-Petrine ornamentation. However, a bell tower of this type was built separately from the church in the 17th century. The vertical "shirinok" at the edges of the facade and rows of square niches with rhombuses in the center are also borrowed from ornamentation, but in the 17th century, such elements were used in the decoration of surrounding galleries.

The main part of the church is a square structure with a single-headed completion. Under the cornice is a belt of kokoshniks, which are too small compared to the prototypes of the 17th century, referring to the arcature belts of the 15th century, for example, at the Church of the Deposition in the Kremlin.

After the revolution, the wooden church was demolished, and the brick one was closed, decapitated, and the top of the bell tower was destroyed. Inside, warehouses were placed, the last of which, in the 1980s, belonged to the enterprise "Soyuzsamotsvety." The church was consecrated again in 1992 and restored. However, during the restoration, the original appearance of the building was changed: the red brick walls were plastered.
