Church of St. Euphemia in Nizhny Novgorod

One of the few surviving tent-roofed gate churches in ancient Russian architecture is the Euphemia Church. Originally, there was a wooden church on this site, built by order of Patriarch Filaret in 1629, but it burned down on May 4, 1640. By the blessing of Patriarch Joseph, the wooden Nikolskaya Church, which was located on the banks of the Volga near the old monastery, was temporarily moved to replace the burned Euphemia Church. Starting in 1642, the monastery began purchasing bricks in Balakhna for the construction of a new stone church.

At the end of 1644, the rector of the Pechersky Monastery became Deacon German from the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, who was elevated to the rank of archimandrite. He brought with him the architect Antipa Konstantinov. The church in honor of St. Euphemia of Suzdal was built in 1645 and became a vivid example of construction by pattern. Its prototype was the Archangel Michael Cathedral of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, also built by Antipa Konstantinov. However, the gate church of the Pechersky Monastery had its own features: it was without narthexes and a bell tower, with a rectangular altar part. The upper part of the building was noticeably smaller in size than the base, visually emphasizing the height of the structure.

The lower part of the church included the holy gates and a narrow vaulted passage for pedestrians adjacent to the monastery watchman's lodge. A stone staircase leads to the prayer hall, located under the open tent. The decorative embellishments are carefully thought out, and the silhouette of the building is expressive. The church is one of the dominant features of the monastery ensemble.

In 2012-2013, restoration work was carried out, which included strengthening and restoring the foundations, dismantling the original wall masonry, restoring the facade of the brickwork, the arch above the passageway, installing window and door openings, roofing, manufacturing and installing a wooden balcony, waterproofing the walls and foundations, restoring the arch above the passageway, installing galvanized steel roofing, antiseptic treatment of stone and concrete walls, fire protection coating of wooden structures, improved painting with oil compositions on wood, constructing new wooden staircases with pedestals, glazing of frames, ceiling sheathing, plastering surfaces inside and outside, as well as foundation work.
