The museum-reserve 'Fanagoria', founded in 2014, is located on the territory of an archaeological monument, the ruins of the ancient city of Fanagoria, which existed for over 1500 years and was likely destroyed as a result of an enemy invasion.

The uniqueness of this place lies in the fact that the territory of the archaeological monument is almost completely free from modern buildings. This allows for the preservation of the integrity of the natural-landscape historical and cultural environment and facilitates academic expeditions that continue the long-term research into the history of the city.
