The Humpback Bridge (Orangerie Dam)

The exact date of the bridge's construction and the name of its author remain unknown. However, its image first appears on an undated plan of the Tsaritsyno Garden, created by Kazakov in the late 18th century. At that time, starting from 1786, all buildings in Tsaritsyno were designed by architect M. F. Kazakov.

Initially, the bridge served two functions: it connected the Bread House-kitchen with the greenhouses on the opposite side of the ravine and acted as a dam. According to the late 18th-century plan, a pond was located above the dam, necessary for economic needs. The utilitarian purpose of the bridge and its secondary role in the ensemble explain the simplicity and modesty of the architectural solution. Due to the significant length of the ravine, the bridge, rectangular in plan, is elongated from the southwest to the northeast and has a small semicircular arch with a cylindrical vault in the center.

The structure was reinforced with buttresses, two of which were protruding risalits that limited the flow of water from the pond.

By the mid-19th century, the Orangerie Bridge, like other buildings of the estate, began to deteriorate. In 1859, losses in the parapets were noted, and by 1886, in the masonry of the lower parts of the bridge and the arch vault. The wooden dam in front of the bridge had almost completely collapsed by 1886. The pond south of the bridge is shown on plans from the late 19th century, but by 1915 it had disappeared and was never restored.

In the second half of the 19th century, on the site of the greenhouses east of the bridge, a dacha area called 'Air Garden' appeared, and the main road connecting the dachas with the Tsaritsyno station ran over the bridge. It was named Air Street.

After the pond dried up and the Bread House was inhabited, the bridge was used only for transport purposes, and its roadway was paved with asphalt.

In the 1960s, after the residents were evicted from the Bread House, the bridge became pedestrian. Over time, the structure deteriorated, and by the 1980s-1990s it was in a ruined state. The bridge 'Orangerie Dam' regained its original appearance after restoration in 1993, when the brickwork of the walls and buttresses, the decorative parapets with white stone elements, and the paving of cobblestones were restored.

Later, in the 2000s, additional restoration work was carried out, including the replacement of damaged sections of brickwork and white stone blocks of the buttresses.

Currently, the bridge is a single-arch structure crossing the ravine. The arch vault has a slightly flattened shape. On the southern side of the arch, there are two rounded abutments, and on the northern side, two walls framing the drain. There are also two buttresses on the northern side. The bridge is asymmetrical relative to the central axis of the arch: its northeastern part is slightly longer than the southwestern due to the terrain features.

During the restoration, the decorative details of the bridge were simplified. This is especially noticeable in the white stone inserts between the pedestals: the oval side inserts were replaced with round ones, and the petal details in the central inserts were changed to triangular.
