The Astrakhan Diocesan Women's School opened on October 16, 1866, at the Annunciation Monastery and was initially a three-grade institution. This event was significant for Astrakhan, as there were only three secondary educational institutions in the city at that time. The school was intended for the daughters of the clergy but also accepted the daughters of officials, honorary citizens, military personnel, merchants, townspeople, and peasants. After ten years, it became a six-grade school, and the number of students reached two hundred. Due to the increase in students, there was a need for a new building. The diocese had no funds, so 40,000 rubles were obtained from the Holy Synod as a loan.

In 1884, construction began based on the design by architect Fol'rat at the corner of Nikolai-Chasovennaya and Novoisadnaya streets (now Chalabyan and Nagin streets). The building, completed in two years, was a large corner structure with a church in the eastern part, dedicated to saints Faith, Hope, Love, and their mother, Saint Sophia. The total cost of construction was over 60,000 rubles, part of which was contributed from the personal funds of the Bishop. The "Astrakhan Diocesan Gazette" reported that on September 18, 1886, the church was consecrated in the new building. However, soon there was again a shortage of space, and in 1895, Bishop Mitrophan found 30,000 rubles for expansion. Architect Karyagin developed a project for an extension along the Cross Exaltation Street (now N. Kachuevskaya Street). In 1904, Karyagin designed an additional third floor, and in 1908, the project was realized, giving the building the modern appearance of a three-story structure. It is known that the foundation made of wild stone from the former monastery church was used in the base of the building.

In 1918, the school closed, and the building housed a hospital and infirmary, later becoming a secondary school. In 1925, it was School No. 5 named after Clara Zetkin. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, from 1941 to 1942, it served as a field evacuation hospital, and from 1943 to 1946, it was the Stalingrad Suvorov Military School. In 1947, the building again became Secondary School No. 5 named after M. Gorky. Since 2001, it has been the educational institution "Lyceum No. 3." In December 2012, the city administration decided to transfer the building to the Russian Orthodox Church until January 2018. The building acquired its modern appearance in 1908. It is a massive three-story corner building, each floor having its own window design. In the corner part, where the church was located, the building was adorned with a hexagonal dome with a turret and a cross, but it burned down in 1949 and was not restored. Of the three exits to the street, decorated with cast iron, only one remains today on Nagin Street.
