In 1635-1636, Archbishop Serapion of Suzdal, at the behest of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, restored the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, which had been destroyed and looted by the Poles. In addition, he built a stone tent-shaped bell tower next to the cathedral with two altars on the lower level: one for the Annunciation and one in honor of the holy martyr Theodosius.
Metropolitan Hilarion of Suzdal, with the permission of Tsar Feodor Alexeyevich, carried out the restoration of the cathedral. He rebuilt the church created by Archbishop Serapion inside the bell tower, abolished the altar of the holy martyr Theodosius, and made the church warm with a single altar for the Annunciation. During winter, Metropolitan Hilarion held services there, and on Sundays and holidays, he performed the liturgy.
On July 17, 1719, a major fire occurred in Suzdal, destroying almost all churches and houses. The cathedral, the fence, the bell tower with the Annunciation church, and the episcopal residence were damaged in the fire. The complete restoration of the cathedral was finished by the Most Reverend Porphyrius, who replaced the wooden roofs with iron, covered the large dome of the cathedral with red sheet gold, renewed the wall paintings, and decorated the chapels of Saints Theodore and John with gilded iconostases. He also built a warm church in honor of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos and restored the stone fence.
Among the subsequent bishops of Suzdal, Bishop Victor, who took the throne in 1788, paid special attention to the decoration of the cathedral. Thanks to his efforts, the icons in the upper tiers of the iconostasis and around the pillars were updated, and local images in the lower tier were adorned with silver-gilded vestments with precious stones. In the warm Annunciation church, he installed a plaster iconostasis. In 1791, a large bell weighing 755 poods was cast and hung on the cathedral bell tower on October 20.
After the abolition of the episcopal see in Suzdal in 1798, the care of the cathedral was taken over by the local residents. In 1815, thanks to the efforts of the cathedral elder and citizens, a chapel in honor of the Nativity of Christ was arranged in the warm Annunciation church in memory of Russia's liberation from the French in 1812. The warm cathedral contains an altar in honor of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos and a chapel in honor of the Nativity of Christ.
