In 1914, merchant Shishmanov decided to build a rental house on a pre-selected plot. The building's design was unusual and original: the facades were adorned with 12 balconies of different shapes, and observation towers were located on the roof. The composition was completed by an attic with a simple relief.

Despite its apparent simplicity, the building amazed the townspeople with its grandeur.

The first floor was rented by Fyodor Akimovich Kovalenko for shops and workshops. He wanted to occupy the upper floors for an art gallery, but the high rent set by Shishmanov proved to be unaffordable for him.

With the arrival of the revolution, the financial situation of the wealthy worsened, while the poor became even poorer. In September 1917, the headquarters of the first reserve Cossack battalion appealed to the commissioner of the Kuban region K.L. Bardizh with a request to house the battalion in Shishmanov's house, which required the requisition of the building. Shishmanov, who had already rented out the house, did not agree to the symbolic 'requisition payment.' However, the house remained in his ownership for some time.

Yekaterinodar was engulfed in revolutionary events, and the city changed hands several times between the volunteers and the red commissioners. The huge Shishmanov house, after the front's collapse, became a prison where particularly dangerous political criminals were held in the basements. During Soviet power, both white officers and communists were kept here.

In March 1922, the building was confiscated and turned into communal housing. The former prison premises were occupied by the poor. Soon E.G. Shishmanov passed away, and the house continued to provide reliable shelter for its residents.

With the onset of perestroika, changes occurred. The house experienced two fires, and a third fire left only a black skeleton. The walls held up thanks to the sturdy brickwork, but the interiors were burned out.

The house changed hands multiple times, and its restoration was prolonged. Now, the facade of the building features three bay windows that have taken over the attic floor, and showcases have been added to the lower floor. The building has gained lightness and airiness.
