In 1727, a wooden Assumption church was built on the southern outskirts of Troitskosavsk, near the now non-existent city cemetery. It was restored in 1836 and lasted until 1942. L.K. Minert mentions in his book that the church was designed in the style of Moscow classicism.

The aesthetics of the exquisite building were emphasized by the bold use of color: dark red walls contrasted with white architectural elements. The church was destroyed by fire, resulting in the loss of a major painting by Decembrist N. Bestuzhev. The remaining parts of the church were dismantled for firewood.

From 1884 to 1888, with funds from the Kyakhta merchant of the first guild Y.A. Nemchinov, a stone Assumption church was built next to the wooden church. This monument of Russian cult architecture from the second half of the 19th century combines elements of Russian-Byzantine style and Russian classicism. The church has one dome and a cruciform plan. The main architectural elements of the facades include massive pilasters of the Tuscan order and clear horizontal lines of the entablature that encircles the building around its perimeter. The octagonal drum of the central dome is topped with a pyramidal tent with an onion-shaped cupola and an eight-pointed cross. The faces of the drum are pierced with arched openings, and round windows are inserted into the tent. The bell tower is designed in a similar manner.

The height of the church from the floor to the beginning of the drum is 10.24 meters, the internal diameter of the drum is 8.30 meters, and the floor area of the church is 336 square meters. The church was closed in 1938 and used as a warehouse for Voentorg. In 1945, it was returned to the parishioners, but in 1962 it was closed again and converted into a gym, and then in 1974, into a branch of the T. Sampilov Art Museum, department of painting and applied arts. In 1982, it housed the Museum of Folk Art of Transbaikalia. In 1989, the church was returned to the parishioners, and in 1994, a parish was registered here and services began. Currently, it is the only functioning church in the city.
