The gate church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was built above the southern gates of Borisoglebsky Monastery in the second half of the 17th century, simultaneously with the construction of the defensive walls. This majestic temple with richly decorated gates gives a solemn appearance to the main entrance of the monastery.

The five-domed church with zakomaras rises above the massive entrance gates, flanked by observation towers of the fortress wall. The facade of the church is adorned with a profiled belt around its perimeter, and the drums of the domes are decorated with an arcature belt, characteristic of 17th-century churches.

In contrast to the calm facades of the church, the gallery of the entrance gates is abundant in details and masonry work. Under the gallery, above the arches, there are niches for icons of the Savior, the Mother of God, and John the Baptist. A distinctive feature of the Sergius Church was its external colorful paintings, while the interior remained unpainted, which gave it a sense of grandeur and stateliness.

From 2013 to 2015, restoration work was carried out, during which the walls were reinforced, the facades, white stone and ceramic decor, as well as the entrance gates, rafter system, and roofing of the galleries, towers, and porch, dome roofs, square base, and gallery were restored. Emergency and conservation-restoration work was performed on the monumental painting of the entrance arches, foundations and porches were strengthened, and cutoff waterproofing was carried out.
