Church of Sergius of Radonezh in Ryazan

Фото 1
The Sergius church was built in 1697 by the nobleman Ivan Ivanovich Verderesky and was originally named the Church of John the Baptist, with an altar in honor of Sergius of Radonezh, which was constructed in 1752 as a vow funded by the Ryazan nobleman Alexei Petrovich Verderesky. In the mid-19th century, the Baptist altar was dismantled, and a new altar was established in the Sergius church in honor of the Theodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God. Instead of the former Church of John the Baptist, a stone Sergius church was erected, and the old building was converted into an altar, which was dismantled due to its dilapidation in 1815 and 1819. In 1852, with funds from Alexandra Alexeevna Anzimirova, a northern altar was added to the church in honor of the Theodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God. In 1888, merchant Dmitry Evdokimovich Yukin financed the creation of a new altar in honor of John the Baptist. Due to the mismatch in sizes, the Theodorovskaya altar was dismantled, and with Yukin's funds, a new one was built between 1902 and 1904, consecrated on October 28, 1904. Beneath this altar was a crypt for the Yukin family. In 1912, the altar of the Sergius church was reconstructed in search of the burial of architect M.F. Kazakov, but it was not found. After the monastery was closed in 1919, the church continued to function as a parish church. In 1940, the building was transferred to the regional driving school 'Transenergo Cadres', and in 1941 it was converted into a Training Combine, establishing a restroom, locksmith, and assembly workshops, freeing the crypt from coffins. In 1994, the driving school was relocated, and restoration work began. On December 17, 1995, Archbishop Simon Novikov of Ryazan consecrated the Baptist altar, and on April 8, 1996, the main altar. On March 27, 1997, the altar of the Theodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God was consecrated. In the summer of 1998, during restoration, 19th-century frescoes were discovered beneath a layer of whitewash, which were restored in 1999 by nun Vasilya Shevchenko. The brick church with a longitudinal-axial composition belongs to the churches of Russian Baroque of the first half of the 18th century. The two-light square of the church is covered with a gentle vault, and the roof with a four-sided tent on wooden rafters and iron roofing is topped with a wooden lantern and an onion dome. The entablature of the square is made of hewn brick and decorated with pediments on the sides of the facades.
