The first mention of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Rostov dates back to 1609. At that time, it was wooden, but after a major fire, the city's merchants decided to restore it. The construction of a new stone church began in 1795 and was completed in 1803. The church was located at the corner of Preobrazhensky Lane and Pokrovskaya Street, distinguished by five gilded domes and a beautiful bell tower, and was considered one of the richest parish churches. It had two chapels: of the apostles Peter and Paul and of Saint Nicholas.

In the mid-19th century, the church's decoration was one of the richest in Rostov, and a real rivalry unfolded among its parishioners A.A. Titov and M.M. Pleshanov for the right to adorn the church. During the Soviet era, the church was closed, the domes were destroyed, icons were transferred to a museum, and the building was used as a warehouse and then as a cafeteria. In 1998, the church, in poor condition, was handed over to the Russian Orthodox Church, and Father Dmitry Sannikov became its rector.

Restoration work began in the church, and Father Dmitry became its rector on April 12, 2006. The church was in a deplorable state, and it took a lot of effort to bring it to its current appearance. Renovation work continues: lighting has been installed, heating has been repaired, and thanks to benefactors, the central dome is being erected.

Services in the church are conducted in the Znamenny chant, which allows one to feel the old Russian spirit of tranquility and spiritual joy. In April 2007, the parish of the Pokrovsky Church decided to sponsor the Orthodox general education school named after the Venerable Abraham of Rostov, which operates on the principle of home schooling. The school was opened in 2001 at the Patriarchal Courtyard of the Abraham Epiphany Monastery and celebrated its 14th anniversary in 2014. About 35 children are educated there annually, including children from clergy families, large families, and low-income families. The study of the Law of God, Church Slavonic language, and church singing complements the traditional school curriculum. Compassion and the ability to empathize are valued in the school, and children with disabilities, children with special educational needs, and children from foster families are educated here.
