According to tradition, there was once a Resurrection women's monastery in Tolchkovo, which was destroyed by Polish invaders in 1609. Although no documents confirming this have survived, a stone church was built on the site of the wooden church that burned down in 1659, consecrated in honor of the Ascension of the Lord between 1659 and 1665. On the southern side of the altar, there was an altar dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, crowned with a dome. In 1671, the construction of a cold church in the name of the Beheading of the Head of John the Baptist began, which was completed in 1687. The church had side altars on the northern side of the altar in honor of Guriy and Varsanofiy, Kazan miracle workers, and on the southern side in the name of the Universal Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. The construction was financed by the residents of the Tolchkovo settlement, who made donations in the form of money, real estate, and other valuables. Each of the side altars and the main church had a separate five-domed structure, giving the church an expressive appearance. High porches with a gable roof were arranged on three sides. The decoration of the church used polychrome tiles and red decorative bricks. The church was surrounded by a gallery, and its wall paintings, which number about 2000 narrative scenes, were created by Yaroslavl masters in 1694-1695. The altars of the Kazan miracle workers and the Three Saints were painted in 1700, and the porch painting was completed in 1703-1704. The wall paintings and the church itself were funded by the residents of the Tolchkovo settlement, among whom Ivan and Andrey Yeremins stood out. The painting impresses with its richness of theological content and the logic of the symbolic-compositional scheme. In the central dome, the Almighty with the Gospel is depicted, and the Old Testament patriarchs are placed in the drum. The evangelists are painted on the sails, and the arches depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and gospel parables. The walls of the church are divided into tiers, depicting holidays, the lives of saints, and other scenes. The Tolchkovo saints are a unique example of miniature in fresco painting. In the altar, the painting is complemented by literary plots on the theme of the liturgy. On the walls of the altar of Guriy and Varsanofiy, scenes from their lives are depicted, while the painting of the Three Saints altar is dedicated to the lives of Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, and Gregory the Theologian. The porch wall painting includes more than 500 compositions, representing an encyclopedia of Russian life. In 1904-1905, restoration of the icons and frescoes of the church was carried out, and since the 1960s, strengthening and restoration of the wall paintings. The iconostasis of the main church was made at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries and is decorated with carved columns. In the early 18th century, a tiered bell tower was built, and in 1875-1876, a stone fence. Until 1804, there was a cemetery at the church. In 1859, all the domes of the church were gilded, and in 1903-1906, a major renovation was carried out. The Church of John the Baptist was closed in 1931 and is now under the jurisdiction of the Yaroslavl State Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. The building of the warm church of the Ascension has been lost.
