The name "in Old Luchniki" has several interpretations: some associate it with onion traders, others with weapon craftsmen. According to another version, it refers to "luzhki," pastures where cattle were traded in ancient times, with St. George the Victorious as their patron. As early as 1460, a wooden church in his honor is mentioned at this site. By the early 17th century, the temple was known to be stone. Based on it, in 1692 and 1694, with the funds of merchant Gavriil Nikitich Romanov, a building was constructed that has survived to this day.

The church was two-tiered, and until the mid-19th century, the upper part was surrounded by a gallery and topped with five domes. On the walls of the square base, window frames in the Naryshkin Baroque style with crests have been preserved. The tented bell tower deserves special attention, where the tent serves only as a decorative detail: the bell tower's vault is closed, and a narrow tent is placed on top of the vault as an ornament.

The main altar of St. George the Victorious was located in the lower tier, while the upper tier housed the altar of the Annunciation of the Mother of God. In 1848 and 1862, instead of the gallery, with the funds of merchant Sodomov and A.V. Mazurina, the altars of St. Nil of Stolobensk and St. Theodore of Sykeon were added. At that time, the apse was remodeled, four out of five domes were dismantled, the refectory was expanded, and the main facade was designed in the Russian style. The church remained in this form until the 1930s.

After the church was closed in 1932 and the last rector, Archpriest Vladimir Proferansov, was executed, the building underwent reconstructions: the domes and crosses were destroyed, the bell tower's ringing tier was sealed, the old entrance was bricked up, the frames were damaged, and new windows were punched. The building passed to the state security organs, which first turned it into a dormitory and then a shoe factory. The church completely lost its interior decoration and was severely damaged.

Since 1993, the building has been transferred to the Orthodox community, and as a result of many years of restoration, it has regained its appearance from the early 20th century.
