61 years ago, the interplanetary station "Luna-2" was launched, which became the first in history to reach the surface of the Moon.

The development of the "Lunar Rovers" was led by a team under G. N. Babakin at the design bureau of the S. A. Lavochkin Machine Engineering Plant in Khimki, Moscow Region. The self-propelled chassis for the rover was created under the guidance of A. L. Kemurdzhian at VNIITRANSMASH in Leningrad, where the running gear for tanks was previously developed.

The "Lunar Rover" consists of a hermetically sealed instrument compartment mounted on a self-propelled chassis. The hermetic body is the main part of the structure, serving as a platform for onboard equipment and protecting it from external influences. It also functions as a platform for the chassis and for mounting the running gear elements.

The control of the "Lunar Rovers" was carried out by a group of 11 operators who worked in rotating "crews." This included a commander, driver, antenna operator, navigator, and onboard engineer. The control center was located in the village of Shkolnoye, Crimea (NIP-10).

The main difficulty in controlling the rover was the delay in the radio signal. The radio signal from Earth to the Moon and back took about 2 seconds, and transmitting one frame took from 3 to 20 seconds depending on the terrain.
