The Bui Local History Museum was founded in 1946 thanks to the efforts of Pavel Mikhailovich Drulis. Working as a forest conductor, he became the first representative of the Bui district in the Kostroma Scientific Society, which studied the local area. Traveling around the district, Drulis collected local legends, peasant household items, archaeological finds, and ancient coins.

In 1922, an independent branch of the Kostroma Scientific Society was established in Bui. Despite the repressions faced by the Kostroma leadership, local historians continued their scientific activities. The official registration of the society in Bui took place on February 18, 1940, and in the autumn of the same year, a space was allocated for the museum, where materials collected by the Drulis brothers were moved. During the Great Patriotic War, the museum was closed, and its premises were used as a warehouse. Some exhibits were distributed among homes, but most remained in storage. After the war, local historians resumed the creation of the museum, with P.M. Drulis being particularly active in this effort.

The museum opened on March 20, 1946, by decision of the city council executive committee. It had two staff members. In February 1950, the first exhibitions appeared, and entry to the museum was free. The first director was Pavel Mikhailovich Drulis, who combined many responsibilities. He worked until September 1953, after which Matvey Ivanovich Matasov took over. In 1966, the museum was expanded and underwent major renovations. In June 1973, Tamara Vasilyevna Olkhovik became the director, serving for 25 years. Under her leadership, the exhibitions were updated, and the museum was expanded.

In 1978, the Bui Museum became a branch of the Kostroma United Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. The city authorities recommended defining its profile as historical and local history. Under T.V. Olkhovik's guidance, museum staff actively engaged in research work, consulted archives, and corresponded with local historians to gather information about the residents of Bui. In 1997, the museum was transferred to a renovated building of the former Sberbank.

Today, the Bui Local History Museum named after T.V. Olkhovik is a complex of two buildings with an extension, housing the main exhibitions, exhibition halls, a lounge, and collections. Residents and guests of Bui can immerse themselves in the history of the region thanks to this museum.
