The Bogoroditse-Sergiev Monastery is historically the successor of the women's monastic community of Tsarevokokshaysk, the Bogoroditse-Sergiev non-staff dormitory monastery, founded in 1886 as a charitable institution, and renamed in 1888 as the women's Cheremis monastery.

In 1999, by the decision of the Holy Patriarch and the Holy Synod, the men's monastery of Bogoroditse-Sergiev Pustyn was opened in the Kilemarsky district of the republic. The construction of the monastery began by the Diocese in 1997.

In August 1998, an important event for the Mari Diocese took place: for the first time since 1928, a procession was held. From the Ascension Cathedral in Yoshkar-Ola, the miraculous icon of the Appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos to St. Sergius of Radonezh was brought to the monastery, which survived the destruction of the Tsarevokokshaysk women's monastery and became the main shrine. The monastery also houses miraculous images of the Vladimir Mother of God, the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, and the Iveron icon of the Mother of God. In 2003, the holy relics of St. Nectarios of Aegina were brought here.

In the monastery, under the guidance of the abbot Archimandrite David Korablev, 12 people serve. Over the years, the monastery has significantly expanded. Services are held in the church of the Appearance of the Mother of God to St. Sergius of Radonezh, built in the traditions of Russian wooden architecture. All buildings, including churches, residential and utility premises, are made of wood. Construction is underway for the refectory building, the economic yard, the enclosure of the monastery with holy gates and corner towers, as well as the abbot's house with a domestic church in honor of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist.

Special attention is paid to the improvement of the monastery's territory: flower beds have been laid out and rare coniferous trees have been planted.

Until 2006, one of the main problems of the monastery was the lack of good roads due to its location in the forest. Thanks to the support of government structures, this problem has now been almost resolved.

Publishing activities play an important role in the life of the brotherhood. The monastery continues the ancient tradition when the holy monasteries of Rus served as centers of enlightenment. Here, not only are books prepared for printing, but original translations from Greek by contemporary Athonite ascetics are also made. Letters from Elder Joseph of Vatopedi have already been published and distributed to monasteries across Russia. By the blessing of the Athonites, a translation into Greek of the life of St. Sergius, the abbot of Radonezh, was completed and handed over to the abbot of the Athonite Vatopedi Monastery for publication. In 2007, the work of the abbot of the Athonite Iveron Monastery, Vasily, titled 'Entrance' was translated.
