The monastery was founded in the first half of the 17th century by monk Ion Golovitsyn. During his time, a small wooden Uspenskaya church was built, and the monastery was called "New Monastery of the Birch Grove of the Assumption of the Mother of God." In the 17th and first half of the 18th century, the monastery gained great fame and prospered. It was often visited by the Suzdal metropolitan Hilarion, and Tsars Mikhail Fyodorovich, Peter I, and Tsarevna Sofia made contributions. Construction was actively underway. In 1651, a stone Uspenskaya church was built to replace the wooden one, which has survived to this day. In 1656, the All Saints church was built over the gate, and in 1657, the Kazan church. According to the inventory of 1764, the domes of the Uspenskaya and Kazan churches were covered with "stone scales."

Since 1724, the monastery has been called Uspenskaya Zolotnikovskaya. In 1764, it became a non-staff monastery, but construction continued: in 1806, the abbot's residence was built, in 1810 and 1820, the area was enclosed with a fence, and in the second half of the 19th century, cells, a guesthouse for visitors, and a public school were built. To this day, only the Uspenskaya and Kazan churches, the abbot's residence, and parts of the foundations of the gate church, cells, and fence towers have survived. The boundaries of the site are visible thanks to a small rampart and ditch where the fence used to be. This is an example of an ancient Russian ensemble from the late 17th to early 18th century with an interesting planning and compositional-spatial solution for both the entire ensemble and its individual monuments.

The location of the main structures was thoughtfully designed with visual perception in mind when moving from the main entrance through the arch of the All Saints church and from the square. The Uspenskaya church dominated the ensemble, located in the center of the northern part of the territory. The Kazan church is situated to the northwest of the Uspenskaya, with a slight turn to the northeast for better visibility from different points of the territory, especially from the square. The abbot's residence completes the ensemble of the cathedral square from the south.
