Gurievi Estate in Babaevo

Фото 1
The founder of the family was Guri Vasilyevich Fedorov, who lived in the first half of the 15th century. The most notable among the Gurievs was Major General Semyon Grigorievich, born on July 16, 1736, in the village of Babaevo. In 1781, he appealed to Archbishop Nikifor of Slaven and Kherson with a request to build a new wooden Protection Church to replace the old one. Semyon Grigorievich also oversaw the construction of the second Protection Church, consecrated on September 29, 1784, and shortly before his death, he donated a large fruit orchard for the church.

He also headed the chief commandant's office for land affairs. To this day, the bell tower of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, built in 1840 near the village of Nikola-Dol, and the old noble cemetery of the Gurievs at this church have survived. The cemetery is now almost completely destroyed by vandals, but the gravestone of Semyon Grigorievich Guriev has been preserved.

In the Kaluga province, members of the family owned several estates. The well-known philanthropist Count Semyon Alexandrovich Guriev, a retired sub-lieutenant, passed away in 1892. For his charitable activities, he was awarded the Order of Saint Stanislaus of the 3rd class.

After his death, his executors used the bequeathed capital of one hundred thousand rubles in silver to build an agricultural school for peasant children in the estate of Babaevo in the Malo-Yaroslavets district. The design of the school in the neo-Gothic style was approved by Semyon Alexandrovich shortly before his death. Construction took place from 1892 to 1896. The building included basements for food storage, ice houses for milk storage, and rooms for cheese aging. The Guriev Agricultural School trained zootechnicians, milk processors, and agronomists.

The building housed a chapel dedicated to the Herbovets Icon of the Mother of God. During the Soviet era, the church space was converted into a gym.

In Soviet times, the Guriev Agricultural Technical School named after Moisei Markovich Volodarsky focused on training technologists in milk processing. With the relocation of the technical school to Kaluga in 1975, the historic building has been left vacant and is deteriorating.
