Near the Kursk railway station stands a small mansion, surrounded by a fence, which does not attract much attention from passersby. However, the history of this house goes back to a distant past, when the current street was a defensive Zemlyanoy rampart. Today, only the cellars of the original 18th-century building remain, while the main part of the structure was heavily damaged during Napoleon's invasion and was rebuilt. The history of the main mansion of the estate deserves the attention of millions.

It is difficult to say exactly when the merchant family Botkin acquired this estate, but it is known that the prominent entrepreneur Pyotr Kononovich Botkin owned the mansion on Zemlyanoy Val until 1832. This date is significant because the sale occurred after the birth of the eleventh child in the Botkin family. It was in this house that the future symbol of Russian medicine, court physician, and outstanding statesman Sergey Petrovich Botkin was born.

Almost immediately after his birth, the Botkin family moved elsewhere. The estate existed in its pre-revolutionary form for over 85 years, and after the Bolsheviks came to power, it was seized from the owners and used for the economic needs of the new authorities. During the existence of the USSR, only the main mansion remained from the estate, which gradually fell into disrepair and was relatively recently restored. Today, the former Botkin house houses a business center, and a memorial plaque has been installed on the building, stating that Sergey Petrovich Botkin was born here. The estate has not gained wide recognition, tours are not conducted on its territory, and little remains of its former appearance.
