The noble family of Barjatinskys was once considered one of the oldest in Russia, with the first mentions dating back to the 15th century. However, over the decades, almost nothing has survived from their extensive estates. An exception is the palace in the village of Maryino in the Kursk region, which has remarkably survived. This palace was built as the main residence of the princely family and was meant to showcase their high status.

The estate was designed in 1811 by the Kursk architect Karl Hofmann. The palace included a central house and two wings adjoining it. The architect chose an eclectic style for the building. The Barjatinskys, possessing significant wealth, spared no expense on the interior decoration, acquiring expensive paintings, antique vases, sculptures, furniture, and creating a rich library. The estate was the main dominant of the area, but it also impressed with its park and pond. In this idyllic setting, the Barjatinskys lived until 1917.

After the revolution, the palace was nationalized. The People's Commissariat of Education sent a commission here, which seized and exported the most valuable art objects, many of which were later sold abroad. Fortunately, the Bolsheviks did not destroy the palace but repurposed it into a sanatorium for the employees of the Central Executive Committee, that is, for the party elite. Where princes once lived, comrades of Kalinin now rested. The All-Union elder visited here, and in 1930 ordered the demolition of the local church, as well as the liquidation of the Barjatinskys' family crypt, on the site of which a boiler house and a coal warehouse were built.

During the Great Patriotic War, the estate went through difficult times. There were rumors that Hitler wanted to gift the palace to his favorite, Guderian, but this was not meant to be. Before their retreat, the Germans planned to blow up the building, but partisans managed to reclaim it. Today, the former estate of the princes houses a sanatorium for the employees of the Presidential Administration, and the park is open for walks.
