Torzhok, founded in the early 10th century, is rightly considered one of the oldest and most beautiful cities not only in Russia but also in Europe. Archaeological studies confirm that the city was established nearly a thousand years ago. There are also written records, such as the "Novgorod Chronicle," which mentions the capture of the city by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1139. In the modern world, few cities have such an ancient history, making Torzhok unique.

The name of the city comes from the word "torg," as it has long served as a convenient meeting place for merchants from neighboring principalities. Trade and exchange of goods took place here, and by the 12th century, the name Novy Torg appears in chronicles. Over time, it transformed into Torzhok and became officially established. The city has always been renowned for its trade, and its favorable location contributed to its development over the centuries.

In the 19th century, Torzhok continued to grow: the population reached 13,000, with more than 20 factories and 8 plants operating. The city successfully traded grain, and a steam mill was in operation. Handicrafts developed, such as lace-making and gold and silver embroidery, which were known far beyond the city. Torzhok was proud of its many churches, and it had hospitals and 10 schools.

In October 1917, Soviet power was established in Torzhok, leading to significant changes, as it did throughout the country.
