Mysteries of Kolomenskoye Reserve: Mystical Legends, Part One

Фото 1
The Kolomenskoye Reserve is one of the largest in Moscow. In the past, it was the residence of Russian tsars, and all key events of that time passed through this place, starting from the Time of Troubles in 1612 and ending with the rebellion during Tsar Alexei Romanov's reign. It has been established that the oldest settlement on the territory of modern Moscow was located in Kolomenskoye. However, this place has another side to its history, known only from urban legends, rumors, and myths. This concerns the Voice Ravine, which is located in the reserve.

The Voice Ravine is situated in the center of the reserve and divides Kolomenskoye into two parts; its length is at least one kilometer. The ravine is characterized by great depth and steep slopes, and even in summer, a misty haze can be observed at the bottom. According to one version, the name of the ravine is connected to the pagan god Veles, from whose name the name Volosov originated, later transformed into Golosov. There is another version, according to which the name is related to the fact that voices can be heard at the bottom of the ravine, which is explained by good acoustics.

In pagan times, the ravine was used for sacrifices. Today, two large stones remain here, which, according to local historians, are part of an altar and weigh over a ton each. According to beliefs, the Devil's Stone grants feminine strength, while the Horse Stone helps with male ailments, and both stones are said to bring luck and happiness. The origin of these stones remains a mystery. According to legend, a battle took place here between Saint George the Victorious and a serpent, as a result of which the entrails of the horse became the Devil's Stone, and the head became the Horse Stone. Scientists confirm the unusual composition of the stones but deny their healing properties, as studies of their composition have not revealed any. Nevertheless, the stones continue to attract supporters of folk medicine.
