In January 2010, the construction and consecration of the new St. Nicholas Church near the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was completed. It was built in honor of the wooden St. Nicholas Church, which was the first building in Blagoveshchensk and was constructed in 1857.

In the mid-19th century, the Amur region became part of the Kamchatka diocese, and Blagoveshchensk became the center of spiritual life for the entire Far East. In the new city, churches began to be built, first wooden and then stone. The first church was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the Miracle Worker of Myra. This first church of Blagoveshchensk, which also became the first home of the city, was erected on a hill at the initiative of priest Alexander Sizyy. He built it together with soldiers of the line battalion in one night, and the next day the church was consecrated.

This happened in 1857. The chapel was built from logs, in which the bodies of deceased Cossacks from the Ust-Zeysky post were stored during winter. A year later, an extension was added to the chapel, and another year later, the construction of the bell tower was completed. Until 1864, St. Nicholas Church also served as the Cathedral until a new cathedral was built and consecrated.
