The Sudzhansky Local History Museum was established by the decision of the regional executive committee, based on a local history corner that was located in the district House of Culture. In 1963, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of the outstanding Russian actor M. S. Shchepkin, the museum was named after him. At the same time, it was awarded the title of "People's Museum," and in 1990 it became a branch of the Kursk Regional Local History Museum.

The museum's collection includes over 4,000 exhibits, and its exhibition area is 219 square meters.

The museum's exposition covers the history of the Sudzhansk land from ancient times to the present day. This region is famous for its treasure-hunting finds.

One of the most valuable collections in the museum is the pottery collection, as local craftsmen have long been engaged in pottery making. The history of Sudzha is closely linked to the names of outstanding locals.

It was in Sudzha that the talented Russian actor and classic M. S. Shchepkin began his theatrical career. Here, from 1906 to 1941, lived P. A. Zalomov, who became the prototype of Pavel Vlasov in A. M. Gorky's novel "Mother." The Sudzhansk land is also associated with the names of artists L. I. Solomatkin, V. F. Bogomazov, F. P. Nesterov, P. K. Likhin, F. S. Konev; scientists P. I. Kotelnikov and V. D. Poplavsky, aircraft designer MiG M. I. Gurevich, and sculptor A. V. Tarasenko.

The museum is visited by about 8,000 people annually.
