The ancient city of Pskov, known for its numerous attractions, stands out due to the unique Pskov school of architecture. One such attraction is the Pogankin Chambers, which received its unusual name in honor of its founder and first owner, Sergey Ivanovich Pogankin.

In those times, most residential buildings were constructed of wood, while stone and other durable materials were mainly used for churches and monasteries. However, the Pogankin family, having sufficient means, decided to build their estate from limestone slabs, which gives this landmark a special uniqueness. It is one of the oldest estates not only in the region but also in Russia.

The construction of the Pogankin Chambers began in 1671 and was completed in 1679. During the construction, three buildings were erected: the tallest, three-story one is located to the west, the southern building has two floors, and the eastern one has just one. The chambers were owned by three generations of the Pogankin family, after which the lineage ceased, and the estate passed to the Novgorod vice-governor Yakov Nikitich Korsakov. For over 250 years, it was owned by the military department. In 1900, it was decided to open a museum of the Archaeological Society, which, by order of Emperor Nicholas II, was located in the former Pogankin Chambers. This decision was made because many archaeological finds were discovered in the adjacent area, and the chambers now house a historical, architectural, and art museum-reserve.
