Over the past century, the ancient city of Uglich has lost many of its symbols. Today, the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist is not only one of the most beautiful churches but also one of the oldest buildings in the city. Founded in 1689 and consecrated in 1690, it retained the name of one of the two older wooden churches that existed on this site.

The initiator of the construction of the new stone church was a wealthy local merchant, Nikifor Grigoryevich Chepolosov, who decided to immortalize the memory of his six-year-old son, who was killed by a steward. For centuries, no one knew that the boy was buried in a church niche, and only in 1960, during restoration, were the remains of Ivan Chepolosov discovered. Fortunately, the church itself was preserved, although it suffered greatly after the arrival of the Bolsheviks, and there were even plans to demolish it to build the Uglich Hydroelectric Power Station on this site.

Today, the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist, having survived many trials, once again impresses with its beauty. It has preserved unique architectural elements, such as high-quality tiles and a bell tower, which were usually destroyed during the Soviet era. Interestingly, as early as 1904, the famous Russian artist Roerich depicted the church's porch in his work of the same name. It is believed that the high cultural and historical value saved the church from destruction, so it is worth hurrying to get acquainted with this architectural masterpiece.
