The Spasskaya Tower got its name from the nearby Spasskaya Church. Its architecture is similar to that of the Nikitskaya Tower: both have four combat tiers and a hemispherical vault at the bottom.

Originally, there was a viewing platform with a bell above the tower's tent, which warned residents of danger, such as fire or enemy raids, with its ringing. Therefore, in the land registry books of the 16th and 17th centuries, the tower is also referred to as the Alarm or Signal Tower.

The tower is located at the western corner of the Kremlin. It has a round shape and no windows.

In the 1970s, during restoration, a wooden tent was installed above the tower.
