Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Solikamsk

The winter Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was part of the Solikamsk architectural ensemble. It was built with funds from local residents on the site of the wooden Introduction Church that burned down in a fire in 1672 and was consecrated in 1709, 11 years after construction began. The cathedral is located on the banks of the Usolka River. The craftsmen who built the cathedral took into account the weakness of the soil and the risk of flooding, so the brick walls were placed on a foundation of marl limestone, which, in turn, rested on piles. This ensured the stability of the building and prevented wall deformation.

As a result of urban fires in 1741 and 1743, the cathedral was severely damaged and was rebuilt by merchant Surovtsov, which changed its architectural appearance. The cathedral has a rectangular shape and is a one-story stone building on a basement with three semicircular apses and a narthex. The ceilings are made of vaulted arches, and the walls between the temple, refectory, and apse have three arched openings each. The facades of the cathedral are decorated with window frames, framed by half-columns and topped with volute scrolls. A particularly impressive feature is the relief arcature belt that encircles the building under the cornice. On the northern and southern facades, the belt is divided into three parts, decorated with weights in the shape of leaves, while on the western facade, the belt is divided into four parts with weights of a faceted shape. Above the arcature belt is a multi-tiered cornice with ornamentation.

The Solikamsk churches considered trade functions, and many basements were used for storing and selling goods. In the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the basement consisted of storage rooms with separate entrances to the river, where merchant goods unloaded at the port were stored. The altars of the temple were consecrated in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, St. Stephen, Bishop of Great Perm, and the icon of the Mother of God "The Sign." The chapels were located in the corners of the refectory: the Stephen chapel on the northern side and the Sign chapel on the southern side. During the winter, cathedral services were held here.

In 1929, the cathedral was closed and transferred to a food processing plant, and later it housed a brewery. Restoration of the temple began in 2005. It is a monument of history and architecture of federal significance.
