Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Tutayev

The complex of the Resurrection Cathedral and the adjacent buildings was formed at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries. At the end of the 17th century, a tented bell tower was built to the south of the church. Unknown architects erected the remarkable three-tiered Holy Gates, which opened onto the main street of the sloboda and connected the main church complex with residential buildings. The bell tower also served as a clock tower, and the dial of the large clock was preserved here until the 19th century. During the gubernatorial reform of Catherine II, changes also affected the Borisoglebsk sloboda. In 1777, it was merged with the Yamskaya sloboda and the village of Novo-Blagoveshchenie, forming the city of Borisoglebsk, which became the center of the eponymous district. The Resurrection Cathedral became the main city cathedral.

Nearly half a century later, in 1822, another merger occurred: the cities of Borisoglebsk and Romanov merged into Romanov-Borisoglebsk. During the Soviet era, the Resurrection Cathedral was fortunate: despite the closure and disappearance of many churches in the former Romanov-Borisoglebsk, renamed Tutayev, the cathedral survived and remained active. Although many treasures of the cathedral were lost, the church continued to thrive, the liturgy did not cease, and ancient relics supported the parishioners and attracted connoisseurs of antiquity.

The Resurrection Cathedral is the spiritual center of Tutayev and plays an important role in the cultural life of the city. One manifestation of the 'Second Baptism' was the revival of church traditions that had not been observed for 70 years. In 1989, the procession with the miraculous icon of the All-Merciful Savior was resumed along the Borisoglebsk side of Tutayev on the tenth Sunday after Easter. Since 1990, the procession with the same icon has been revived along the Romanov side of the city on the Sunday before Elijah's Day, which began in 1888 in honor of the 900th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus. The clergy of the cathedral not only revives traditions but also uses modern technologies for the benefit of the church. In 2006, artistic lighting of the cathedral was completed: 280 lamps, each with a power of 500 watts, create a unique nighttime appearance of the ancient shrine.
