Skopin is first mentioned by its current name as a "town, fortress" in the Ryazhsk land books of Grigory Kireevsky from 1629-1631. They indicate that "Behind the boyar Ivan Nikitich Romanov in the estate of Skopin, a fortress, on the Verde River. In the fortress, there is a church site for the Renewal of the Temple of the Resurrection of Christ our God and the chapel of Ivan Kushnik, and the church lands for the Renewal and Ivan Kushnik are twenty cheti to the altar in his boyar courtyard in the fortress." According to the salary books of 1676, the church "of the Renewal of the Holy Temple of the Resurrection" was a cathedral, with church land of 20 cheti and hay meadows for 50 kopens. The exact time of the construction of the stone cathedral of the Resurrection church instead of the wooden one is unknown, but the chapel was built in 1752, and in November of the same year, the protodeacon with the brotherhood requested its consecration. In 1757, the protodeacon with the brotherhood addressed the Consistory with a report explaining that the cathedral church in the name of the Resurrection in Skopin, built many years ago, had greatly deteriorated. The heads and crosses were loose, cracks appeared in the walls and vaults, the roof leaked, and the iconostasis was old and unadorned. The protodeacon with the brotherhood repeatedly appealed to the Skopin Chancellery, but unsuccessfully, so they asked the Consistory to present information about the dilapidation of the church to the appropriate authorities. In response, the Consistory decided to gather information about the funds for the construction of the church and the possibility of its repair, as well as to request an assessment of the necessary materials and work from the Skopin Town Hall. However, no results were achieved over 25 years.

At the end of 1781, the Governor's Administration informed the Consistory about the payment of salaries to the clergy of the Skopin cathedral. On November 2 of the same year, the Ryazan governor Mikhail Kamensky sent a request for the assignment of parish courtyards to the cathedral. Soon, the Governor's Administration reported the return of church land to the cathedral, but it was soon replaced again with a salary of 85 rubles, which ceased in 1820. In 1822, the cathedral clergy requested the return of the land but were denied by the Governing Senate. In 1793, "eight numbers" of estate land were allocated to the clergy, but it was later recognized as city land. Among the monuments of antiquity in the Trinity Cathedral, the icon of the Savior from the Skopin Trinity Monastery stood out, which was transferred to a chapel in the city after the monastery was abolished in 1764. In 1810, the chapel burned down, but the icon remained unharmed and was moved to the cathedral church.

In the 1930s, the cathedral was closed and demolished, and in its place, a city stadium was built in 1936.
