The cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist in the Ioanno-Mariinsky Monastery was destroyed in the 1930s. Its construction began in 1848 with funds from the Caucasian Charity for the Poor of the Spiritual Order, personal funds of the first Bishop of Stavropol, Hieremia (Solovyov), and donations from other benefactors.

Over time, the church was expanded.

In the 1930s, the cathedral and three other monastery churches were completely destroyed.

The building of the church in honor of St. Martyr Seraphima has survived, although in a heavily altered form. It currently houses a branch of the regional psychiatric clinic, as do most other monastery buildings, despite the decision to return the Ioanno-Mariinsky Monastery being made back in 1991. Since then, this decision has been repeatedly confirmed by city and regional authorities, but its implementation only began in 2004. To date, part of one of the buildings has been transferred to the monastery, where the sisters of the community and several small utility rooms are located.
