Transfiguration Cathedral in Chukhoma

Фото 1
In the distant past, there were two wooden churches on this site: the Afanasievskaya, dedicated to Afanasy and Cyril, the Alexandrian miracle workers, mentioned in 1621, and the Nikolayevskaya, in honor of Saint Nicholas the Miracle Worker. Due to the dilapidation of the wooden churches, they were dismantled, and in 1746, a new church was built in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord with funds from merchant Pyotr Mikhailovich Nelyubov and parishioners. The church had three altars: the main one in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, and the right and left ones in honor of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos and Saint Abrahamius of Chukhoma the Miracle Worker. It was served by two priests, two deacons, and three psalmists. In the past, the cathedral was surrounded by a beautiful stone fence with an iron grille on the southeast and south sides, while on the northeast, north, and west sides, there was a city garden, as confirmed by preserved photographs. In 1897, a church house was built for the cathedral's shelter, and in 1901, the construction of a second two-story wooden house began. The cathedral operated until 1932, after which it was closed. Initially, it was planned to house a museum there, but due to the establishment of a power station, the summer and cold Transfiguration church was used for these purposes, while the rest of the cathedral's premises housed a mill, carpentry and wallpaper workshops, as well as a sawmill of the Chukhoma district industrial combine. After the cathedral was transferred to these organizations, the bell tower and the domes of the cathedral were destroyed, and the baroque carved iconostasis was completely lost. The architecture of the cathedral combined new principles of the structure of cult buildings of the 18th century with ancient Russian decor, as seen in certain details of the stone decor. The surviving window frames of the lower tier can be dated to the late 17th century. The church lost its five domes and tent-like bell tower, and it was also reconstructed inside. Nevertheless, thanks to the preserved details of the facade, the building reminds of its ecclesiastical purpose. Fragments of frescoes from the past century have survived under the vaults. The cathedral building is recognized as an architectural monument of the 18th century, and a memorial plaque has been installed on its wall. However, the building is deteriorating: there are cracks in the walls of the cold church, and the fence and gates are destroyed. On August 2, 1996, the Transfiguration Cathedral celebrated its 250th anniversary, and festivities were held for this occasion. Currently, the building of the Transfiguration Cathedral belongs to the municipal unitary enterprise 'Chukhomazhilikomkhoz.'
