Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Sloboda

Фото 1
In 1530, at the request of Grand Duke Vasily III of Moscow, the venerable Korniliy returned to the Komel Monastery, blessing the venerable Gennady to lead the gathered brethren and engage in the construction of the church. Soon, likely with funds from Grand Duke Vasily, a wooden summer church was erected in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Between 1644 and 1647, the abbot Filaret built a brick two-column five-domed three-apsidal church, in the southern apse of which was the Annunciation chapel. In 1805, a refectory with chapels in honor of Korniliy of Komel and Gennady of Lyubimograd was constructed, and in 1846, the southern Sergius chapel was added. The monastery was closed in 1928, and in the 1960s, the refectory and chapels were destroyed. Currently, it is undergoing restoration while in a state of disrepair.
