The first church in the village of Trikhsviatskoye was founded in honor of the feast of the Intercession of the Mother of God and consecrated on that day. Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible, upon learning of the new settlement, sent an icon of the Three Holy Hierarchs, which was placed in the only church at that time, the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God in Elabuga. Initially, it was a wooden structure, next to which there was an altar in the name of the Prophet Elijah. Father Peter Kulyginsky, relying on the memories of his father, Archpriest Nikita, who served in this church for five years, left a description of its structure. The wooden church stood to the left of the current one, was large and tall, with two rows of small windows protected by iron grilles. The roof had ten domes covered with white iron. From the west side, a large porch on pillars led to the northern doors. Inside, benches were installed along the walls and in the center.

Over time, the church and altar became dilapidated and even burned, so in 1813 it was decided to build a stone church, the third since the founding of the Intercession church. At that time, brick production was actively developing in Elabuga, and the quality of the bricks was high due to the abundance of clay. Construction was carried out only in the summer to ensure quality. In 1820, with donations from parishioners, the construction of a stone church in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God began, with altars dedicated to the Prophet Elijah and the Three Holy Hierarchs. In the collection book issued for construction in 1776, it is noted that it was issued from the Elabuga Spiritual Administration for recording voluntary donations.

In 1988, in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, Archpriest Sergey Lepikhin was appointed rector in Elabuga. The Intercession Cathedral was promised to be returned to the Orthodox community back in January 1988, and during the celebrations in Kazan, this was announced as a completed fact. However, in practice, everything turned out to be more complicated.

The parish council had to repeatedly appeal to the Council for Religious Affairs under the Council of Ministers of Tatarstan and its deputy Yuri Vasilyevich Mikhailov, as well as travel twice to Moscow to the Ministry of Culture. Only in December 1988 were all the necessary documents obtained. Before that, parishioners actively participated in volunteer work, restoring the temple. People aged 70-80 worked for hours, performing heavy tasks with remarkable energy. For example, Yakov Ivanovich Kobeleev, despite his venerable age, almost single-handedly laid the flooring with old tiles in twenty days. Finally, on October 2, 1988, the first service in the Intercession Cathedral took place after a long break. Permission for it was obtained from the city executive committee, and the service was led by Archimandrite Anastasius, now the ruling bishop.
