The cathedral of John the Theologian was built in 1689. On the first floor, there was an altar in honor of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, and on the upper floor, that of the Apostle John the Theologian.

In the second half of the 19th century, thanks to donations from D. I. Kludov, the main benefactor of the monastery, the cathedral was completely rebuilt into a one-story building. A new iconostasis was installed, with icons painted by the famous Ryazan artist N. V. Shumov. The church was re-consecrated in honor of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian on October 5, 1862.

Nearby was a church in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also built in 1689. However, it was dismantled in 1868 due to dilapidation. In 1868 and 1870, with funds from D. I. Kludov, a new building of the Assumption Cathedral with three altars was erected. The main altar was dedicated to the Assumption of the Mother of God, the right one to the "Tikhvin" icon of the Mother of God and to the Venerable David of Thessalonica, the heavenly patron of David Ivanovich Kludov, and the left one to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. The bell tower became a decoration of the monastery.

On May 20, 1989, the cathedral church in honor of the holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian was consecrated, marking the beginning of a new history of the monastery's revival.

On August 1, 1993, a new church in honor of Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, Holy Martyr Juvenalius, Archbishop of Ryazan, and all new martyrs and confessors of Russia was arranged and consecrated under the altar of the John the Theologian Cathedral. This church houses the remains of the last three abbots of the monastery, found in 1992, and a brotherly ossuary was arranged here, as well as Archimandrite Abel Makedonov, who passed away in 2006.
